This week on One Funnel Away Stories I had the pleasure of speaking to Brendan McCauley. He is an affiliate marketer and course creator with a passion and drive for coaching. Brendan guides fellow entrepreneurs throughout their journey to help them find the clarity they need to make their business thrive.
Brendan is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to leaving the corporate world and transitioning to becoming your own boss. He believes that there are three crucial steps to achieving freedom through funnel building: an open mind, a system, and a community.
Today, we’re getting some insider info on how you can implement his strategies to make your own business a great success. Stay tuned!
Finding His Passion in Entrepreneurship
Every entrepreneur has a story that leads them down a path to career ownership. For Brendan McCauley, it is a personal motivation. Throughout his childhood, he struggled with his weight and was able to completely transform his body through the P90X program. The transformation also opened some business opportunities for him where he discovered his love for coaching.
As he entered college he continued to indulge in his passion for training and coaching and found that he had a natural knack for it. He enjoyed the combination of personal development and building a business but at the time didn’t have a clear idea of where to take it.
“Be very clear and define what it is you want to do.”- Brendan McCauley
Because of his upbringing, a career in the corporate world seemed like the most secure option. He went down that route for about ten years while he completed his undergrad, masters, and coached on the side.
Brendan soon realized that his entrepreneurial passions were too strong to ignore and sought to find a way to make it his full-time career. He decided to pursue several different certifications to beef up his resume and just didn’t look back.
Brendan McCauley Chases His Dreams With the OFA Challenge
“If time and money were not an issue, how would you spend your day?”- Brendan McCauley
One morning Brendan woke up and decided to quit his job and drain his 401k to make his dreams happen. With the support of his girlfriend he left and was able to connect with the CEO of the Les Brown Institute and trained under him for about a year and a half. From there he joined some startups for the next few years to try and get his career going.
He hit a bit of a wall when those startups failed to launch due to underfunding and luckily found the OFA Challenge around that time. It revitalized his commitment to just making things happen. He decided to launch a test group to help fellow entrepreneurs hit their monthly marks. He was able to set structure on how he wanted to provide coaching around helping entrepreneurs to achieve what they want to do while leveraging his talents.
Differentiating Yourself From the Pack With Brendan McCauley
Brendan believes there are three main deciding factors when it comes to building your business. His major entrepreneurial mission is to help others gain clarity in what they want to do. To do that there are a few targets he has to use to help his business function.
- Surround Yourself with Like-minded People
If your goal is to make millions then you have to hang around millionaires. Energy is truly transferable.
- Keep an Open Mind
You have to be able to approach every situation with an open mind. You are never in a position where you’ve learned enough and you might be a valuable asset in teaching someone else. If you can keep that mindset you can keep yourself open to new opportunities.
- Implement a System
Every phenomenal business has a system. Learning that and implementing it into your own business makes all the difference in the world.
The biggest thing Brendan thinks keeps entrepreneurs from thriving is a lack of focus. Establish your purpose. Build the vision and set the goal. If you’re wondering what direction to go in then ask yourself a question. If time and money weren’t an issue what would you be doing every day? It is so important to not only love what you do but strive to be the best at it. That takes passion and drive. And you need clarity to fuel it.
“Just do it and it doesn’t matter how ugly it looks.”- Brendan McCauley

Thank you for starting this podcast. Every day I’m studying, building, and implementing! The support and guidance you guys provide is priceless. I may have given up if it wasn’t for your support. Everyone comes into this thinking it’s going to be easy, and for a few it is. The majority of us must dig deep and change ourselves to become “good enough” to make it to the payoff. My goal is to one day be on a stage with people chanting my name. Not because I want to be a hero. Not because I’m rich, or famous, but because I made such a positive impact on their lives that they love me for it. Thanks for all your help in keeping this dream alive. D

The One Funnel Away Challenge was exactly what I needed to actually ‘finish’ a project I had been working on for years. It’s so easy to put stuff off, isn’t it? Well lucky for us we get access to some genius marketers and entrepreneurs through this challenge. They give us the formula and work with us to go through it... so there’s no excuses anymore. Can’t wait to hear more stories of this from Steve! Right now I’m actually building up a funnel for my Juggling Video Course and will be re-doing the OFA Challenge to make sure I finish it in time. - WhosChrisHughes

Every phenomenal business has a system. And when I finally learned that, and I started implementing that to my business that can make all the difference in the world. So you know, me looking at McDonald's and McDonald's you go to, it's all the same thing you put in the fries this way they cook this time you put them out, put them in the car, and it just repeats.

I'm very excited to be here today The show is completely dedicated to asking entrepreneurs about their failures to their freedoms and that little tiny space in between and what actually caused it for them. I'm very excited today I have a very cool guest on with me today. His name's Brendan McCauley very excited to have you on Welcome to the show.
Brendan McCauley 1:23
Hey, Steve is pleasure to be here man. Thank you very much.
Steve Larsen 1:26
Yeah. pumped to have you on here this would be great. I you know, I see all the camera equipment everything behind you. But just for anyone else who's listening or watching out What are you in the business of what do you do?
Brendan McCauley 1:36
Sure. So I guess that's that's always kind of the story right? When you're playing entrepreneur, you get to take like multiple hats and put it on and just figure out where where things fit. So if you want to kind of give you the the back end story and how it led me to where I'm at and where all the crazy camera equipment and everything else was great. So I'll kind of get you all the way from from originally so I struggle with weight when I was a kid. And I say that because through that transformation You're seeing like, Beachbody p90x like the whole workout thing. Yeah, so you get a six pack in like 20 minutes. So anyway, so I took that on, and then with that they there was a whole, you know, business opportunity. So basically got all the way through high school and then when I started getting into college, I it was a lot of personal development for myself. So you go through this whole transformation, and that got me into the realm of coaching. So it was mixing like coaching it was basically owning my own business and really be able to put these two together. And I love the concept that you know, I had grown up in a corporate raised household so you know, Mama gone through corporate she's still in it. So you're 40 4040 kind of deal what are the hours like the whole nine to five and I just, that was kind of my first taste that was my grasp of do create your own thing, create your own business so then that's where you started doing your own stuff, like everything that you teach is like the wrong way to do it. You know, create your website like do all the rest of it. There was no talk about a hook a story and offer like none of this. So that was kind of my first initial and then I went through I tried everything under the sun that I want to do even just from you know what it takes Dude cooking food firefighter, digital arts like you name it, if it was a hobby or you don't have it for me, I want to try it. So I spent about 10 years in corporate. And during that time I got my undergrad, took a few years off, I got my masters. So I was
Steve Larsen 3:15
redoing the coaching during that time as well.
Brendan McCauley 3:18
Correct. Okay. Okay. So it was the passion on the side during the corporate stuff. Right. Great, okay. And I think that's where a lot of entrepreneurs find themselves where it's like a mix of, you're doing what you know, you have to to be able to pay the bills, and then you've got this thing on the side that, you know, if you could close your eyes, and time and money weren't an issue, that's how you end your day, every day for the rest of your life. So I've always had this this passion is freakin fired up. And it's like, man, I would love to just coach full time but how do I do that? And at the same time, you see all the rest of this stuff entrepreneurs like you that really know that you take the lead like here's what you got to do is literally as simple as that. So it was originally started with network marketing. I love the idea of affiliate marketing. Yeah, I love the idea of you know, when you get into that personal development, you see something like a personal powerful Tony Robbins and les Okay, well, courses are definitely one of the ways to go because you can, you know, you leverage your time, which is phenomenal and then you can really build this audience. So, like, how do I put all of this into kind of one system? So I went through I got multiple certifications I got, you know, Les Brown the speaker, yeah. Oh, yeah, sorry, I'm Les Brown certified. I got my life training life coach training certification. I got a personal trainer certification. So long story short, it had to do with coaching, I've had to do a training I was all in and just to get a whole bunch of dude. I know within three weeks, all of my certifications and all started at different times within three weeks they all finished at the exact same time, which is the coolest thing. I was I was like, it was like okay, plaque, your plaque your plaque here. I'm still sitting there like Okay, so what do I want to do? And I got to the point, man, and I love my girlfriend this I remember I talked to her One morning I said, babe, I want to quit my job, cash my 401k I don't want to chase my dreams. And she said, I fully trust you about so the scariest and the thing I've ever done in my life, dude. And here's the funny part. So once you make a decision like that, and again, my my mom and I have worked for the same company. So you know, it wasn't just like I was doing this and nobody knew about it. Everyone obviously knew me because they knew her. And it's people walking along, you know, the back your desk was like printers, everything okay? Like, we can still get you a job here like you don't have to worry about it. I'm sitting my head like, dude, if I never leave this, I'm just gonna keep slowly just complain. I'm flying to Air Force One. I'm doing this at like the table all day. Like, Bro, I can't do it anymore. So So I connected with actually the CEO of the Les Brown Institute, I got a chance to train with him for about a year and a half. connected with a couple other guys I did to startup companies that unfortunately were underfunded did that for about a year, year and a half. Most recently had another year and a half projects of another startup company. So I guess I'm kind of you know, that's just that's where it took me. Yeah. And anyway, so I bring up some of the green screen stuff because I loved having the creative aspects in addition to organization, automation and accountability. So there's all was just it was waiting for me to say okay, I have no idea how I'm going to use it. But I know it's going to be leveraged in some form or fashion. So more recent project I started we've actually been shooting videos like crazy again, we put them out a lot. I don't know if you know Ryan White, but he's probably one of the guys might be connected with as well to you know, do a lot of this stuff. So anyhow, all that had come together. I know Doug bought and you know, I got on his list I got kind of like Rachel and Tim and a few other guys. And he's like, dude, there's this one funnel away and obviously so you guys blasting, blasting, blasting. And right prior to that I had gone to an event put on by Timothy Lee. And you know, he was like, dude, I, you know, you guys can have these great concepts, like really just get a test group, get it out there and just see what the hell happens. Do it for free, provide the value, get the test tools, get the feedback and then put a price on it. So I started doing it. I didn't know exactly what I wanted it to look like. And I said Look, I want to help entrepreneurs make you know XYZ number of dollars per month. If you're in go on this journey with me. Let's see what happens. So we're getting about six The people in a group starts going really well. And all of a sudden LFA comes in. And that was probably about eight weeks into it, which was phenomenal timing, because it was like great. Now I have a set structure on how I want you to help provide coaching around helping those entrepreneurs to achieve what they want to do while leveraging my talents around. So anyhow, long story short, that's essentially how I gotten to you know, being able to take on this meet with the people that you know, I had gotten a chance to, to connect with originally. And through that time, I came to find out that I love coaching women, we just had a phenomenal connection. So it was it was a great transition. And now I'm also having the privilege the opportunity to work with a world renowned trainer and I'm also helping to build out his business at the same time. So it's a you know, kind of like to two projects, mainly heavily focused on his and really straight out global massive impact in
Steve Larsen 7:52
a lot of fun stuff. That's super cool. So you Okay, so just to kind of recap you, you started getting into the p90x and and Beachbody And there's a business opportunity behind it network marketing. You go and you start learning how to be a coach, like I love the coach, get tons of certifications while you're in the middle of corporate world. And then eventually, like, I got to head on out. So how many things like online? Did you kind of go through? Or how many business tries when you realize you needed to jump ship? You don't? I mean, well, what was there? Yeah, I'm sure there's a bullet there always is for all of us.
Brendan McCauley 8:22
Yeah. So a lot of it's, I mean, you see, you want to have like your own. I never got into the whole social media space, as you do. It just wasn't my role wasn't thing I really got into. But you know, I mean, I tried a couple things here and there. And then of course, you know, you wonder, Well, why are people not flocking to me? I just put out a website like this thing should be blowing up. I've ever watched a couple of your videos specific. You're like, No, do not build it nature's calm, like you actually need to, you know, go out and do all these things that you guys teach and whatever else. So a couple light bulbs start going off. Yeah. Yeah, I tried all that. And I tried, you know, building my website. I tried, you know, posting every now and then I never really hire my own social media team. You know, and that was probably again, one of the Learning is that you want to leverage the who not the how. So instead of me trying to be the one guy the guy did my own was the one like Hootsuite, you know, I tried that a couple times all the basic tools they like, Alright, let me dabble it in, see what the heck happens. And you know, I just think it was a lot of trial and errors, it was putting out some random videos. And it was so funny too, because like, I remember one video very specifically, it was totally geared towards helping other coaches at that time to take their business to the next level. And it was on an old dude old YouTube account, like I never touched, I came back probably a year later has something like 15,000 views, and I never paid attention. Like if I had been doing that the whole entire time just to be able to help leverage everybody else at what they wanted to do and be that resource in that tool. Like just thinking now wouldn't knowing what I know
all the difference in the world, right? All the difference.
Steve Larsen 9:52
So thinking back to like, like try one, two. Now, you know, the first try to write now like, what are the things that have really made the difference for you? I mean, because you You try a lot of stuff, I try a lot of stuff. But like, there's these little tiny tweaks, little tiny tricks like, oh, make sure to never do this again, or make sure to always do this every time you know, like, what were those things for you kind of actually, as as time passed, and you've gone through multiple attempts throughout,
Brendan McCauley 10:15
I say probably two of the biggest things, one, surround yourself with the people that you want to be like. So I made it I made it a goal to surround myself by the guys that make millions because you know, you know, just as best as anybody around not millionaires eventually become the 10 billion you know, millionaire whatever. But you know, and and being able to really just be an open book, always come with an open mind. You're never too young to teach, never too old to learn. And then the other part that I think was critical was every phenomenal business has a system. And when I finally learned that, and I started implementing that into my business that can make all the difference in the world. So you know, if you look at McDonald's and McDonald's you go to it's all the same thing you put in the fries this way to cook this time you put them out, put them in the car and just repeats and I remember even just watching a couple of your videos Given a couple of your promos, like you know, the big, you know, mastermind groups that you got going and you talk on the back end, and you got a ton of videos, right? So I just like, absorb whatever I can out of this guy, because obviously he's doing something right. And I remember you talking about all the systems that you get to link up to each other. And that's really a lot of what I've leveraged and tried to do the same way. And when you could literally just sit back and just be okay, you know, if I took myself out of this position, and I start here, and I want to be able to get here is that fully mapped out where you can walk away from the process, show somebody how to do it and just let it run with it. So I started to learn how to do that. That's how my mind started to operate. And now even with like the startup companies, that's the first thing that I would do when I go in is Okay, tell me what you're looking to accomplish. Let's automate the class thing. And then you know, you can go off you can focus on what you want to do. So it's more working on instead of working in
Steve Larsen 11:50
Yeah, mix. So you gotta surround yourself with people you want to be like, be teachable, and every business is a system, which is so true. And that was a part for me that it took a long time to realize You know actually is that is the business it's not like the funnel is part of that system it's not the whole system and that took me a long time to go through figure that out. So I guess like looking back also on all the things you've gone through Why are you selling what you're selling now you know because you clearly chose to not be selling all the other tries you went through you know and I went through a lot of tries to and thankfully number 17 didn't work I'd be stuck doing it so you know backwards now you're like okay, look at all these things I've gone through and I've tried and why are you selling what you're selling now? What do you like about it now?
Brendan McCauley 12:33
So one thing I tried to focus on especially when I got into like this you know, quote unquote coaching role so you can go you get any kind of coaching certification and you know, you put the title of life coach on anybody Okay, great everybody's life coach. I wanted to be I wanted it to be something that truly spoke to what I was really good at and what I you know, things that I love to do, just from a coaching aspects, you know, you can take somebody from here to here, okay, well, what are you focused on and for me is helping people gain clarity because usually, it is I can even explain kind of, you know, the way I set it up for this 45 Day Challenge is you see people come in with a lot of thoughts, right. And that's usually where it starts. It's like I got all these pictures up here, let's hone your idea into one thing specifically. And then let's get organized. So you can achieve those things, whatever that is, that could be relationships that could be finances. You know, that could be profession that could be your health, whatever the deal is, like, let's get very clear. And most of the times you just see people that are sort of jumbled out of their head. And for me, it just, I found that naturally, it's very simple for me where you and I can have a conversation, you can talk about 90 things that are just sort of floating up here. And I'll just pull that out to you. We put it into, you know, a system and a tool on the back end. And the transformation that somebody goes through and the clarity that somebody has, is phenomenal. And I guess the reason why I do it, Steve is because it's so fulfilling to me to watch somebody just have that like, aha, shoulders all of a sudden just can relax. They can take a deep breath and it's like, dude, thank you so much. I now get this and it's like that. One hour that we talked was like, Oh, so it's just very rewarding to be able to help somebody and then to also, you know, feel financially filled, that I can provide that and provide my family
Steve Larsen 14:12
at the same time, that makes total sense that you've gone in and you've said, like, coaching is my thing, you know, because most of the time I've talked to people on this and I go through this, it's totally normal natural for people to do totally unrelated things. And it's like, we're gonna do this and this and this. Like, they're, they're kind of zigzagging all over the place till they find that thing, it seems to me like I always like to draw out like people's brought like, what they've gone through as you're talking. I'm like, okay, they needed this. I needed this, you know, and I draw it on. But it's funny because as I'm looking at this, like, it's always been coaching, hasn't it? Like, this is who you are, your soul is coaching other people and you've just been figuring out ways through these things, these methods like how to sell that,
Brendan McCauley 14:50
right? Yeah, well, so funny enough, even the like the company that I was just with, like I was utilizing certain skills that I was good at, but it wasn't necessarily in the vertical that I loved. So the gentleman that I'm working with right now, you know, I totally fell in love what he does, because he's in that personal development realm he's in, you know, I mean, out of 100 people a 2% are really interested in really developing themselves personally, professionally. So when I saw that he had that he had a program, he had a system, I'm like, Okay, great, I totally gravitate off that I can coach I can mentor with them. And at the same time, as you were putting a lot of these things into the back end, I can leverage what I've already known. I had to be in a spot that I just like, you want to wake up and you can't wait to do it. Yeah. So yes, to your point, 100%. It's, it's being with the inevitable and then being able to leverage everything. So for example, that you guys teach in FFA, just as an example, that starts to make the wheels turn, and I'll see the coolest thing dude is when you put that into play, I know it's always the first dollar but like, you get that first sale of like 47 bucks, and then like another one, and like another one, you're just like, holy, it works.
Steve Larsen 15:56
The best feeling
Brendan McCauley 15:57
Yeah, I mean, obviously then, you know, you grow up Do what you've done. And you got multiple businesses generating obnoxious amounts of money. But you know, when you start hitting that, and you can help somebody else get to that same point where now they have that system of their own, and they say, Oh my god, I just sold three packages this day.
Steve Larsen 16:13
Oh, I'll shoot you testimonial, but she is exactly what it was. It was terrible. It was.
Brendan McCauley 16:19
So it was
Steve Larsen 16:20
it was very neat. Hey, I appreciate you taking the time. I actually just wanted to ask a final question here. Because Is it your coach and you see people's progressions and you see people how people are moving forward and back and, and that's a gift that coaches have, you know, not everyone does. And so, since you do, and you see everyone on this path, you see people progressing in it, I guess, first of all, two parts here. What do you think is the biggest thing that keeps people back from being an entrepreneur? And number two, I guess, how would you help them get around it? Biggest thing
Brendan McCauley 16:47
be very clear, and define what it is you want to do. So you know, a lot of a lot of the mentoring that we do that I'm focused on with this gentleman I'm working on. It's you know, it's establish your purpose. Build the vision and set the goal. So, you know, I think a lot of times people they want to take on that entrepreneurial path, but they don't necessarily have like, what's that driving thing I want to go after. So then they wanted to sort of like you said before they flail around into a bunch of different ideas, or I'll do this or Hey, I heard dropshipping makes money, but I had zero desire to do it. Yeah. So you know, okay, here's what I think would help them be successful. You ever read the book? Good to Great.
Steve Larsen 17:24
Oh, great one. Yeah. Good one. Okay.
Brendan McCauley 17:26
So so for anyone who has it, I'll give you the Can I get the three little summaries? I don't want to run with it. So you have to love what you do. You got to be the best at it. And it's got to make financial sense. And that was what they had saw across all three, you know, all the companies that had so if you can achieve those three things, then you know, my guess my follow up my last final question would be that if time and money were not an issue, how would you spend your day and if you can truly wake up like I wake up and I say I'd love to coach people, then do nothing but focus on that 110% with the people behind you to back that. And at the times when it's most scary that will be most rewarding. Because if you wake up and you're 85 you're like, I never took that chance and never made that leap. Even Steve Harvey said, He's like, dude, you're gonna jump off. You're not gonna your parachute is not just going to open man, you're going to hit rocks, you're going to you know, bang around. But if you don't jump, your parachute is never going to open. So just Just do it. And it doesn't matter how ugly it looks. It really
Steve Larsen 18:18
