Welcome to the very first episode of One Funnel Away Stories! My name is Steve Larsen and I’m an affiliate marketing coach/ master offer crafter. For the last couple of years, I’ve been a part of the One Funnel Away Challenge – a place where people learn how to make funnels that work. How to grow your own company without taking on debt or giving away ownership?
During my time with One Funnel Away, I’ve encountered thousands of people who have successfully made their transition from failure to freedom. And this podcast is where I’ll be sharing their incredible stories.
We are taking off and we’re bringing out the big guns! Today I’m joined by my mentor and one of my dearest friends. The one and only – Russell Brunson. Russell is the founder of ClickFunnels and the creator of the “One Funnel Away” Challenge, so there’s absolutely no better way to start our podcast series.
In this episode, Russell shares his journey from selling potato gun DVDs to becoming one of the greatest entrepreneurial thought leaders of his generation.
Russell’s Long Road to Affiliate Marketing Success
It’s very difficult to imagine Russell being anything other than the funnel expert and entrepreneurship aficionado that we all know and love. But believe it or not, 15 years ago, a wrestler kid from Boise State asked his girlfriend to marry him and was desperate to figure out a way to support his future wife and family. And that’s when he started learning the game.
His first project was teaching people how to make potato guns and he sold DVD tutorials. And that was just the first of over 120 funnels that he actually built before arriving at the idea for ClickFunnels. It’s a really wild ride, but his story is a testament to how important persistence and self-belief are for making it as an entrepreneur.
How To Cultivate Perfect Self-Belief
Russel shares his secret to cultivating and maintaining that perfect belief that allowed him to keep going at it time after time after time… Despite all of the failures, he always kept believing that he was going to make it one day. He is confident that his quiet, keep-your-vision-to-yourself approach allowed him to be efficient and not experience extraordinary amounts of pressure to succeed.
Many people make the mistake of oversharing their ambitions. When you tell everyone that you’re going to be rich and successful, what you’re actually doing is just putting yourself under a huge amount of unnecessary pressure to succeed. Because every day you’re not successful and reaching your goals – you spend feeling like a failure. And the journey always takes time.
Not being bogged down by failure is essential for becoming an entrepreneur. But you also have to give yourself a chance to do learn how to do it. That’s why Russell encourages you to stick to your day job and keep your dream plan a side hustle as long as you need it to feel safe. By doing so you won’t have the imperative of succeeding hanging over your head, which would only end up causing you insane amounts of stress.
“Keep doing it, have some fun with it, be creative… If you keep consistent with it long enough, eventually it’s going to work.” – Russell Brunson
The Secret To Selling Anything
Selling is not about the product, it’s about the process. And that’s the very first thing you learn when you take One Funnel Away Challenge. If you truly learn to understand the very basics of an effective sales process – you’ll be able to sell absolutely anything!
The fundamental components of each and every funnel can be summed up by the principle of Hook, Story, Offer.
- Step 01 – Understanding the psychology behind creating the offer
- Step 02 – How to elicit the right emotions by creating a story around your offer
- Step 03 – Creating hooks that will allow you to grab people’s attention
This is one of the core principles that the One Funnel Away Challenge is founded on. And it works on all levels, whether you’re just starting out or running a million-dollar enterprise.
“People literally pay us a hundred grand for a day for consulting… And they’re like ‘Man, you’re so smart!’ And I’m like… ‘You can do this at home, by yourself’”- Russell Brunson

Thank you for starting this podcast. Every day I’m studying, building, and implementing! The support and guidance you guys provide is priceless. I may have given up if it wasn’t for your support. Everyone comes into this thinking it’s going to be easy, and for a few it is. The majority of us must dig deep and change ourselves to become “good enough” to make it to the payoff. My goal is to one day be on a stage with people chanting my name. Not because I want to be a hero. Not because I’m rich, or famous, but because I made such a positive impact on their lives that they love me for it. Thanks for all your help in keeping this dream alive. D

The One Funnel Away Challenge was exactly what I needed to actually ‘finish’ a project I had been working on for years. It’s so easy to put stuff off, isn’t it? Well lucky for us we get access to some genius marketers and entrepreneurs through this challenge. They give us the formula and work with us to go through it... so there’s no excuses anymore. Can’t wait to hear more stories of this from Steve! Right now I’m actually building up a funnel for my Juggling Video Course and will be re-doing the OFA Challenge to make sure I finish it in time. - WhosChrisHughes

00:00 Boom, what's going on everyone? This is Steve Larsen and welcome to Secret MLM Hacks Radio. Today, I want to teach you guys, actually, I want to tell you kind of an interesting story. This is the story of when I gave up on MLM.
00:11 If you're like me, you know MLM is an amazing opportunity to grow a real asset for yourself, but you also see that there's huge issues starting to emerge. Like why haven't big MLMs let tactics change in over 30 years? Or why have they been cutting commissions smaller and smaller, or even how dumb is it that old MLM rules say you'll get in trouble when you use the Internet to grow your team? These are some of the burning questions we all face today. This podcast will show you how real MLMers like us are waging war on the old dying methods and we aren't cheating by only bugging uninterested family and friends. Follow this podcast while I expose the shocking methods I'm using to build my 10,000-person downline and get people begging to join my team daily. Here's the new tactics without all those old rusty MLM shackles. My name is Steve Larsen, and welcome to Secret MLM Hacks Radio.
01:05 Hey guys, I'm very excited for today and this episode. First of all, I just want to give a few shout-outs here. I know a lot of you guys are inside the secret. I'm on the max program and I've loved having you in there. First of all, want to give a shout-out here to Ambulin. This is Ambulin right here. Ambulin has been taking this Secret MLM Hacks course and she just said, "I just took a leap of faith in a new opportunity. And in just three weeks of launching, I've had 200 people join me in my downline and we've sold almost $27,000 of products just with our warm market. I'm so thankful to be here, to learn how to succeed at MLM without having to hit up all my fans friends and family members to buy my products and join my opportunity."
01:39 Everyone that has an awesome story. Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate you reaching out with that. And that has meant the world to us to go see that. Thank you so much and big shout-out to Ambulin for that. Hey now, Whoa, Whoa. Listening to Ambulin's story here. Many of us have not had that experience inside of the MLM or network marketing kind of environment. In fact, I remember when I first started, I did not want to join one and funny enough that shouldn't be offensive to any of you, but some of you, in fact, probably most of you, might have felt that way sometime in the past. What happened to me was a buddy called, we had just found out that we are expecting our first baby. My wife and I were so excited and we were pretty broke still and stuff was challenging.
02:18 I was in college, she had already graduated, but I was still in school full time and I really didn't have time to work like a job. So we were living on student loans and things were tight, you know, like really tight. And I mean on the outside looking outside you'd be like, Oh, they're totally fine. But on the inside, what it started doing was starting to kind of like challenging my sense of manhood. Okay. And then almost like, I don't know if I can provide and I don't know if I can, anyway, it was rough on me. And I remember the, I I started looking for opportunities to make some extra cash and I started trying businesses and launching stuff and I was doing all kinds of, anyways, I was doing all kinds of stuff and nothing really seemed to be working it. I remember I was staying up super late, getting up really early and studying and then doing stuff.
03:06 I wasn't stuck in learning loops. I was actually trying businesses. I was trying to sell stuff. Nothing was really working. So my buddy, he and I and college, we were super competitive and his name was Trevor and Trevor and I was really competitive in, in college for the first like two years, whatever. And then, then he graduated before I did. But Trevor, I remember one day he called and he reached out to me and he goes, dude, Hey man. And he never tried to do something in real estate at the time. He goes, Hey man, I got this guy he's on, he's on the line right now. He's going to help us make a bunch of money. I don't quite know how it works. You've got to talk to him. Now, those of you guys who've been in MLM or network marketing in any amount of time, you have heard that pitch, right?
03:45 That's the standard pitch that you're taught by your upline. And I didn't know that. And my perception of what network marketing and MLM at the time was, was bad. Okay? Was bad. And I'm going to talk about that in a moment here because anyways, I'm just being real about it. Is it okay if I'm open and honest here with you guys? I want you to feel with me what it was like for you when you first heard about the MLM that you're in. Okay. Or network marketing that you're in case I, I want you to like walk with me on this journey because this is a big deal to understand. So anyway, my buddy calls me and I didn't know what was going on. I was like, some dude wants to help us make money. Heck yeah, man. Three-Way a minute. I don't even know what a three-way was or that my phone could do that.
04:28 And I remember he, he gets on the phone with me and this guy, great guy, right? Nothing against them. Nothing against the fact that this is what happened. But this is the state, this is what's taught, right. This is like the standard in MLM and no one gets offended yet. Stick with me, stick me with me through this and I promise you guys will like where this is going. I got a, I got a nice little treat here for you as we go forward. But anyway, he calls, I answer and I was like, as soon as, as soon as he started talking, I was like, why do you want me to pay a little bit of money to in order to join this thing? I was like, shouldn't I just be able to do it? And I started fighting him on it and I was that guy.
05:04 I was not a friendly guy on the other side of the phone. Okay. I was, I was actually a bit of a I wasn't a jerk, but I wasn't like fun to be around either. And I was like, no, I'm not doing this. Is this one of those MLM pyramid things? That's what I asked him. Oh. And I remember this sinking feeling in my stomach showing and my throat kind of tighten because I felt like my buddy, right. And, and you know, it's, it's totally fine that he did this, but at the time I was like, you know, I was a little bit peeved man. I was a little bit mad. All right. I was mad that he, he did that and I hung up and I was like, absolutely not. Don't ask me to do that again. Right. That's what I said to his upline.
05:46 I knew, I didn't even know the word upline at that time. Anyways, he calls back, my buddy does, Trevor does immediately afterward and he goes, dude, what the heck man? Like you would be awesome for this. You would be so good. I was like, man, I don't want to join one of those pyramid things, man. Not those. Is that even allowed? Is that like, you know what I mean? Like I was such a greenie that I, those are the types of questions I was asking, which you listening, watching to reading this right now can understand. Remember when you had those also people have questions and I had questions at that time. So what happened was I ended up saying, you know what dude, I'll do it for you or join. I'll jump on in. And I joined his downline. I go and I drive in my car to meet the guy that I had just kind of chewed out on the phone, which is a little bit awkward.
06:29 And I sit down across the table from him and I, he starts, he basically says, he goes, you want to be successful in MLM, right? And I was like, well, well yeah, I want it to pay for this, this brand new little baby. We're so excited to have, you know, in a couple of months. And he goes, yeah, you could totally do that. Absolutely. He goes, you know what? He goes, you know what if you want to be successful, it makes sense that you got to do what successful people do, right? I said, yeah, that makes complete sense. He's like, all right, this is what successful people do. They write out a list of the people in your phone who you would be a great fit for this and we're going to call them. I was like like right now, like I was already uncomfortable, right?
07:09 So we started writing down this big list and he didn't let me leave until we called. So we started calling and I remember the first, I still remember, I remember his name. I don't want to say the name. I remember who it was. I remember, I remember it very well because it was a hard situation for me and it didn't go well and it's still kind of soured some of the relationships to this day, we still don't really talk anymore. Right. What's up, dude? Hey man, this guy can help us make a bunch of money and I don't quite know-how. Do you mind if I three-way him in and he'll tell you about it? Sure. All right. That sounds good, dude. And that's when I threw my first home party and I threw a home party and I threw and anyway, stuff did not go well.
07:52 And in fact it got, it got so awkward because I started, you know, guys, when I do something, you might be like me, I go all in. So I called everybody in my phone. I did. I mean, I did. I reached out to so many people and I went hard and, and people were like, no, no, no. And it got really, really awkward. Well after, I dunno, probably after a few weeks of, of running really hard at this and it was actually, I mean, it was attempting to do this as I was going full in what, you know, what I thought was full in, I realized that there might be another way to this. And I was sitting in a I was sitting down and I was, and I was trying to figure out how these other guys were, were, were actually being successful in MLM.
08:33 What are ways that that was like my first, that was like my first big experience in the MLM slash network marketing space and it didn't go well. And, and you know, I did a few of the things and I, and I did recruit some people and, and, and I, I, I remember I, I leveled up and stuff in and I get a trophy and that was really fun and I was like, man, maybe I can do this. And I had been trying like a lot of stuff and it still hadn't been going very well. But anyway, I was new. I just didn't know. I got so frustrated that I kind of gave it up. And it's true story. I was like, I am done with MLM. I am done with that word marketing. I do not want to be a part of this anymore. If this is, I remember saying, if this is what I'm supposed to do to be successful, I don't want any part of it.
09:17 Right. And I know some of you right now, you watch and listen to me and you're not part of one for the exact same reason. Fast forward a couple years, I ended up getting hired by the CEO of ClickFunnels and sat side by side with Russell Brunson and built his internet sales funnels. And I I got a little nerd streak in me proudly. And and I was sitting down next to Russell Brunson building out his funnels, no idea that he, anyways, anyways, someone reached out and it was, and it was about an MLM. Well, my previous experience about MLM was not good. And I was like thinking of back to the guy I called and all the friends, I called them, the people who would not ever call me back anymore. That might be why I don't like the phone now. Right? I was like, Oh man, it was not a good experience.
10:03 Anyway, so I'm sitting there next to Russell and, and someone starts talking about MLM and I scoffed, I flat out was like, huh, don't business w what? Who wants part of that? I don't, you don't. Right, right. Wait. Right. And what I had did not realize is that at the same time, Russell Brunson was at the top of two MLMs at the exact same time using funnels. Not, not in the moment when I was sitting there, but he had been in the past, this massive heavy network marketer and MLM are heavy. Right. And he came from that world, like he was heavily involved in it. He, and multiple times he was like this massive downline person. I had no idea. And I'm sitting there and I'm making fun of it. And which was not a good feeling. And I remember he knew I had that attitude about it.
10:53 So we'd be driving down the street or he'd be anyway, he'd be like, Hey man, I was driving down the street and where I live there's a massive MLM headquarters. I dunno, probably a couple of miles down the road. He's like, dude. And they've a huge, beautiful campus. And I remember he was sitting there and he was he's looking at me and he's kind of smile on. He's like, man, look at, you know, huge. That building is, that's amazing. We went there last night for kind of a fun festival they were having. Look how big that is. Think about what MLM built, right? And he was kind of like rubbing in a little bit. And what I had to realize, I don't remember how it totally happened, but I realized there was this moment where I realized that the reason he was okay with it was that he was playing the game differently than I had been taught.
11:38 That was the only difference. He wasn't, I was bad mouth and the overall vehicle of MLM and he wasn't doing that. He was saying, no, no, no, no, no, no. Fantastic, fantastic vehicle. But what you were taught, terrible, right? Awful strategy, not amazing. And I was sitting there and I started thinking like, dang man, like if that's the case, if that's how this is played, like what if I try this again? And I started building recruiting funnels. I was his funnel builder, pretty good at building funnels, and I decided, decided to start putting up some recruiting funnels and I started learning how to attract other people who are already interested in joining MLM. All I realized is that I didn't have a strong enough filter on who I was trying to get into my downline. That was the big secret and I hope as you're sitting here you've realized, Oh my gosh, if I have any kind of negativity around network marketing or affiliate marketing or sorry a or MLM five, any kind of negativity around that, maybe, maybe it's the driver's fault, right?
12:48 Just speak a little truth here. Maybe it's how I've been driving. Maybe I'm in the wrong car, but I'm on the right highway. You know what I mean? And you got to start thinking like, Oh, wait a second. There are millions of people out there who want to be an MLM who don't ask dumb questions. Like, is this a pyramid scheme who don't require you to babysit them 24 seven in order to do anything? You know what I'm talking about? If you've recruited anyone ever, you know what I'm talking about, right? There are millions of people out there who are begging to find another cool opportunity because they made their last one work and now they're just looking for another downline. They can start building out, okay, this is super common. And what I did not understand is that who I'm going after is the big key who, so I am the most strict.
13:40 It is the first step on everything I create here and I guys, I want to teach you something real fast. It actually comes from Jay Abraham. If you guys know Jay Abraham, he's a beast. He has like my pictures. I'm printing out. This is Jay, Jay Abraham's the beast. He is one of the massive business development guru. Very, very smart. And what I had to realize was something that Jay Abraham said, number one, I need to get better at the who, right? Who am I trying to attract? Who. And when I started realizing that the whole game started changing and I started recruiting like compared to how I treated MLM back then, like versus now. Now we, I mean I've passed I think over 2200 people asking to join my downline people that I've never met. Okay? I don't let them all in either. I vet them, right?
14:26 And I get to choose who I work with and I have these machines that are out there, auto bringing people in. And what we're doing here is a mini-series teaching you how I'm doing that and what those things are. And I'm really excited for you guys to learn more about this stuff. So number one, the biggest lesson I want you to take from this first episode here, and then you got to promise me you're going to do something for me. Game number one, get more strict. Get more clear on the who that you want to work with, the who that you want to sell your products to, the who that you want inside your downline. That is so much the key to this entire game. And funny enough, here's the big secret. It's the key to any business, not just MLM or network marketing.
15:08 Jay Abraham teaches this, okay? You've got to treat the business like it's a real business, right? You're buying a position inside of a company, okay? This is how you grow a downline. There's only three ways, right? Here we go. Number one, you can increase the number of clients meaning get more new prospects paying you, right? So number one, you can get more customers, get more people. That makes sense, right? I was like, Oh, well I could go find more people to sell my products to. I could find more people to I could find more people to join my downlines, right? Here's the second way. The second way is to increase the average transaction. So literally increase the amount of money that they spend with you. You could go to those people who are in your downline and go and help them know that, Hey, did you know there's this promo or that promo?
15:58 Are you on smart or auto-ship or whatever your company calls it. Why don't you add this product in? I actually just did that about a month ago and put more stuff on it cause I was like man I didn't know we had these other cool things too. Okay. Alright so the first one, get more customers. Second one, increase the amount of spending or number three, increase the frequency that they buy. So instead of every month, maybe now they buy every three weeks, every two weeks or maybe you drop in your own, you know. Anyways, what I want you to understand this whole thing is that this game changes when you play it by different rules and there are the big guys, the big girls, the big people who are out there actually crushing it. They don't play it by the same rules that the standard MLM or is taught.
16:38 Okay. They treat it like an actual business, a business that needs a clear who a business that needs a lead machine, a business that needs to figure out how to increase customers, increase how much the spending and increase the frequency that they actually spend as well. That is any businesses chore. And not just if you're outside of MLM, there's no difference. This is a business. Treat it like one and it'll turn into an asset for you guys. Real fast. I want you to go to SecretMLMHacks.com. We are going to do a big live webinar in the past. It's kinda been more of an automated presentation, but we're going to do a live webinar and I want you guys to join me on that. All the details are there for you. Go to SecretMLMHacks.com and excited to have you guys come and join that.
17:20 We're going to do a big, big final big webinar with you guys here, live with me, with you and I want to show you more of the stories that we've been and of the people been able to impact. The next one I want to share with you though, actually speaking of this is this is Kelly. Everyone say hi to Kelly, Kelly K. Kelly. It took a picture of prints it out. Hopefully. That's all right as well. Kelly reached out and she had a pretty crazy, cool experience with the program that we want to share with you guys because we are playing mom by different rules or playing MLM. It's a different game and it's different than anyone honestly knows about K. It's very, very powerful. And it's not that it's new. Most people just don't know what though.
17:59 Okay. It's not new. It's just not known. And I want you to know that game Kelly said through this process of found my direction and found a really, I found myself, I found what I wanted to do and this is it. I'm in it to win it. I see it a feel and it's working. I now have a plan and know what I want. I don't have to feel like a sales weirdo anymore when building my business. And if you guys are felt like that, that's exactly what I felt like the first times that I was going out and trying to actually sell the MLM products game. I felt like a sales weirdo. And it's something that I want to share with everybody. And that's, that's part of the, the thing that I've loved most about doing this and selling the secret MLM hacks program and having students in there and having you guys be a part of it is that if you go in there and you decide to treat this like a business, not a side hobby, right?
18:46 I mean, he could still be your backend business, but treat like a business. A business has needs, it needs cash flow and it needs leads, right? Business cashflow and it needs leads. Those are the two things that if you learn how to do that, like you will in any business or any company ever because the world is yours. Most network marketers, most emulators don't know this stuff and they're being taught. It's thought that it's wrong. It's just kind of awkward in today's world to walk around and talk to all your friends and family about this thing. I'm not saying I always get a crowd who gets butt hurt about that statement. If they're interested, then yeah, why wouldn't you talk to them and sell them on it? But if they're not, don't, right. It's annoying. I would be Wolf. The opportunities that good, I owe it to them to go talk to them about it.
19:28 Okay. Then you make the judgment. Call yourself, but when you run out of leads and your warm market dries up, your business will die unless you can find a sustainable lead source. How many people have asked to join your downline while this video has been going? While you've been listening to this episode, how many people have asked to find out, have come to you, people you've never met and said, "Tell me more about your opportunity." If the answer is zero, that is why Secret MLM Hacks exists and that is what we teach people how to do. The real lead machines cave. Go to SecretMLMHacks.com. This is a mini-series we're doing called Modern MLM. This is part one of four. Very excited for the next three parts as well. I want to dive into a little bit more of the little nitty gritties that actually make this game work.
20:12 Thank you so much. Appreciate you guys being a part of the show. I really enjoyed having you here. Here, go to SecretMLMHacks.com and watch that presentation and then also on that page as an option for you to go and check it out live, we're going to do it live on December 10th. 21:01 Hey, thanks for listening. Please remember to rate and subscribe. Hey, I know it's tough to find people to pitch after your warm market dries up, right. That moment when you finally run out of family and friends to pitch, I don't see many uplines teaching legitimate lead strategies today though. You see, after years of being a lead funnel builder online, I got sick of the garbage strategies most MLMs have been teaching their recruits for decades. So whether you simply want more leads to pitch or an automated MLM funnel, head over to SecretMLMHacks.com. Join the next free training there. You're going to learn the hidden revenue model that only the top MLMs have been using to get paid, regardless if you join them. You also go into the three-step system I use to auto recruit my downline of big producers without friends or family even knowing that I'm in MLM. If you want to do the same for yourself, head over to SecretMLMHacks.com. Now again, that's SecretMLMHacks.com.
