I spend a lot of time on the show talking to new entrepreneurs on their trials and triumphs as they build their businesses on the One Funnel Away: Stories show. It’s inspiring to watch them overcome challenge after challenge to reach their goals. Often, I see a lot of myself throughout the different interviews I host. So I wanted to take an opportunity to tell my own story in the hope that it may be a source of motivation for you.
I was a natural-born entrepreneur, but I didn’t know it. It wasn’t until I was in college that I started to focus on building (and failing) businesses. I was completely broke and looked at the businesses around me, completely sure that I could run them better if I had the chance. But I had no guidance, no one pointing me in the right direction until I came across Russell Brunson’s materials and the world of ClickFunnels.
DotCom Secrets had just come out, and I became totally absorbed in that world. 34 tries and fails later, and here we are today! I hope you all find something valuable to bring to your entrepreneurial journeys from listening to my story. Stay tuned!
“I did 17 tries before even knowing what a funnel was. And it was another 17 before one exploded.”- Steve Larsen
How I First Realized I Was An Entrepreneur
Some of my earliest childhood memories were entrepreneurial in spirit. I remember being in fifth grade standing in the playground and realizing I was different than the other kids. The way I communicated and interacted with the other kids was fundamentally different. For a while, I thought something was wrong with me. I carried that belief through highschool and even got kicked out to sell laser pointer pens. After school, I would sneak onto golf courses to collect the balls and sell them back to golfers!
At the time, I had no idea my behaviors were entrepreneurial. I had no example of that growing up. I didn’t know anyone else with a career as an entrepreneur. Now it’s pretty apparent to me that I was an entrepreneur all along! I do want to preface this and mention that I don’t think you have to be born an entrepreneur to be successful. Like anything else, it’s a skill set that can be learned. And throughout the years, I have gotten better at it!
By college, I was fully aware that I wanted to build businesses. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. But I was flat broke. I had nowhere to really look to for advice or a way to move forward. That all changed when I discovered Russell Brunson.
Becoming the “Funnel Guy”
After diving entirely into the world of ClickFunnels, I joined a funnel building thread and was eventually hired to be on Russell Brunson’s team. I became the funnel guy! Pretty instantly, the imposter’s syndrome set in. If you’re an entrepreneur then you know what I’m talking about.
You might be familiar with that feeling. The thoughts that you’re not qualified enough, skilled enough, good enough. Wondering how the heck you even got to where you are. I was feeling it all, big time!
But I leaned into those questions and just got to work. Every day I would wake up at five to get to work by six on my bike might I mention. The first three hours of the day, I would work on my own projects and by nine would pivot to working on my day job. At six, I would bike back home and spend another three hours on my projects in the evening. I did that every day for two years.
There was a lot of pressure being Russell’s funnel guy. His success was larger than life, and here I was broke and unsure of my skills. Every time I turned in a funnel, Russell would tear it apart and give it back to me to do again. He was never mean about it, but it seriously left me feeling pretty defeated a lot of the time. It would take THIRTEEN months before I built a funnel that Russell felt didn’t need revision.
“I had my eyes set on the wrong skill set.”- Steve Larsen
My Evolution into a Marketer and Entrepreneur
For a while, I just thought I was on the brink of getting fired. Russell giving back funnel after funnel really made me feel that I wasn’t great at my job. It wasn’t until we had an eye-opening conversation that my mindset completely shifted.
“I thought the funnel was why I was successful. Russell taught me how to be a marketer. It’s a very, very different thing.”- Steve Larsen
Russell expressed that there wasn’t anything wrong with my actual funnels. He hired me because I was a great funnel builder. His goal was to transform me into a great marketer. Russell helped me understand that cash was earned through marketing, not great funnels. I implemented his message and made my first million in thirteen months as an entrepreneur.
As we move forward, my goal is to teach you more about marketing. You may have been focused on nonrevenue generating skills in the past and now is the time to change that! If you’re an entrepreneur then I hope you found some value from my story.
Not Sure How To Get Started?
It wasn’t until my 17th funnel try, that it all started working, big time. You know what? There are PATTERNS of failure and PATTERNS of success. I WISH I had the One Funnel Away Challenge to guide me. Click to accept the 30 Day Challenge.

Everyone comes into this thinking it’s going to be easy, and for a few it is. The majority of us must dig deep and change ourselves to become “good enough” to make it to the payoff. My goal is to one day be on a stage with people chanting my name. Not because I want to be a hero. Not because I’m rich, or famous, but because I made such a positive impact on their lives that they love me for it. Thanks for all your help in keeping this dream alive. D

The One Funnel Away Challenge was exactly what I needed to actually ‘finish’ a project I had been working on for years. It’s so easy to put stuff off, isn’t it? Well lucky for us we get access to some genius marketers and entrepreneurs through this challenge. They give us the formula and work with us to go through it... so there’s no excuses anymore. Can’t wait to hear more stories of this from Steve! Right now I’m actually building up a funnel for my Juggling Video Course and will be re-doing the OFA Challenge to make sure I finish it in time. - WhosChrisHughes

I started having some imposter syndrome. If you don't know what that is, it means you're like, oh man, I'm about to get found out like, I'm not good enough. I'm not qualified. I don't have
the I don't know. I don't have the plaque. I don't have the
credentials. How did I get here? And a lot most new entrepreneurs struggle with that. And you might be right now, I started struggling with it. I was already I think by that time I was, I was on try business try number 20. I did 17 tries before even knowing what a funnel was, it was another 17 before one exploded. If you're like us, you've dreamt of building your own business empire and the freedom it can bring you. But today there's hidden traps on the path of entrepreneurship placed by Big brother and the big brands. So now we're forced to answer hard questions like how do we grow a real company without taking on debt or giving away ownership? Or how can we get leads and buyers for our own products when there's so much competition with deep pockets? Finally, those questions are answered and 10s of thousands of people are taking the challenge. To walk the new path of entrepreneurship, follow this podcast while I ask them about their shopping journey from failure to freedom. You can join them too at one funnel away, calm. I'm your host, Steve Jay Larson, and you're listening to one funnel away stories. What's going on everyone? Hey, welcome back to the one funnel way story show today I wanted to tell you a little about my own entrepreneurial journey because it took me 34 tries over five years to get this right. I remember if you if you're watching this right now, you'd likely have at least identified that
the you're an entrepreneur, congratulations. Yeah.
But like when did you realize that? I remember I was in fifth grade. I was on a playground. It was an elementary school. Obviously, we were out. And everyone was everyone was talking about I don't know. I don't remember exactly what happened. But I had the distinct thought I could take it to the exact place where I was standing right now. And I had the distinct thought as a fifth grader. I am different. I am fundamentally not like other kids like I'm having a hard time communicating with and being with other people and friends. I felt like something was really wrong with me. And I held that belief even into high school in high school. I don't know, I was not self aware, I almost got kicked out of high school because I kept selling knickknacks. And it was it was laser pointer pens. When I was going in, we'd sneak into public golf courses into the lakes, we'd clean them up and sell the golf balls back to the golfers gay. And I'm like, oh, wonder what I should be when I grew up. Like, it's pretty ridiculous to look backwards. And like, dude, you need to be an entrepreneur. I didn't know that though. And didn't really have an example of that around me growing up. And so I didn't know and if you're watching now, you may not also understand that you probably are an entrepreneur, and you probably have been, I don't believe that you have to be born an entrepreneur. It is a skill set, like anything else that you can learn. But a lot of you though, when you're coming into the one funnel way story show, you're in the clickfunnels world, you've built the funnel stuff, you're in the internet marketing game, and you're trying to figure out Am I going to be good at this? A lot of you already know that you are an entrepreneur. So when I was in, when I was in college, I finally got to college and I asked myself what I need to do to start making money and and I'm trying all these businesses and like these three to six month rotations, I was wanting a business trying to I mean, I would literally walk down Main Street for some of them and try and sell my products. I was walking down Main Street and such and, and it was like try one that was utter failure three months later try number two utter failure try number three again and again and again and again. And I remember like, I think
Unknown Speaker 3:21
it was like three years of that and I
Unknown Speaker 3:22
was on try like 12
Unknown Speaker 3:24
and remember, I was riding my bike back
Steve Larsen 3:26
to our little tiny freezing apartment back at the time. And I remember looking at all these companies and all these other businesses as I was biking by and be like,
why am I still broke? I know what I would do to that
guy's business. You know, I was totally the guy judging on the squeaky bike who was totally broke judging like, man, I know how I would sell that company.
I sell that product. Why
are they doing it that way? And I'm the broke kid on the bike like it was stupid game, but I remember asking myself why am I still broke. I ended up running into Russell Bronson's material I ended up seeing clickfunnels stuff. Nothing like one funnel way challenge was out.
his.com secrets book I think barely just come out. There was nothing else. There's no expert secrets, teaching scripts, there's no traffic secrets, teaching how to get massive attention for your stuff. It was just the.com secrets book. And I was in my marketing classes in college.
Unknown Speaker 4:14
And I was reading through this book and I was like, Oh my gosh, you're gonna stuff like this stuff is Oh, I've been looking for you. Right? If
Steve Larsen 4:21
anyone ever felt like that before, like maybe you're watching Listen, and now you're like,
Unknown Speaker 4:25
I finally like someone who gets it. Someone who sees the material and can
Steve Larsen 4:30
teach me I knew that was what I knew there was more and I started going through the material and I would get in a little bit tiff with some of my marketing teachers, because like that's not what Russell Brunson teaches that's not what these guys over here who are rich and doing it that are doing over here. And but I started following the funnel building thread. Not a lot of guys know my story. I ended up getting hired to work for Russell Brunson and be his funnel guy. And I'm bringing this up for a very specific thing. Okay, right now, wherever you are, you're watching you're listening to this. You're reading about it. Ask yourself this question
Unknown Speaker 5:02
what would it be like to sit this far away right like one aren't literally back to back
Steve Larsen 5:09
with Russell Brunson. I swear I saw him floating sometimes. And there were zeros and ones coming from the ceiling into his head. Okay.
peeling it. It was ridiculous. how brilliant so brilliant. And I'm sitting there
and I started having some imposter syndrome.
If you don't know what that is, it means you're like, oh man, I'm about to get found out like I'm not good enough. I'm not qualified. I don't have the I don't know. I don't have the plaque. I don't have the credentials. How did I get here? And a lot most new entrepreneurs struggle with that. And you might be right now, I started struggling with it. I was already I think by that time I was. I was on try business try number 20. I did 17 tries before even knowing what a funnel was. And it was another 17 before one exploded. And so I was on trying to like number 20 and this was my schedule. Guys. Stick with me for just a moment because this is a very powerful principle. If you are watching Wondering why you're still broke? I'm gonna tell you, because that was the question that popped in my head. And this is my entrepreneurial journey, right? This is what it took for me to understand this very key principle. Russell Brunson funnel guy, right. This was several This is four or five years ago now that, that that'll happen. I was Russell Brunson his funnel again, I'm sitting there. And I would wake up at 5am. I ride my bike into his office, you know, he go on into his office, and I was there at 6am every day, and I work on my own stuff from 6am to 9am. When he would come in at nine, I would switch gears and I would completely adjust and turn into working on his stuff from nine to six, normal 40 Hour Workweek, right? More than 40 hours, way more 40 hours a day, but from nine to six, then I would go back, I put my kids to sleep and then I would work on my own stuff again from about nine or 10pm till midnight. So every day I was squeezing out about five to six sometimes seven hours. I was literally working a second job while working for him. And I go to bed at midnight and wake up at five. And I had this conversation with myself. I was like, Okay self ready to feel a little pain. Ready, get a little discomfort, right and your life you cool with that? And I started that that's literally what happened and I started telling myself like, yep, I'm willing to be tired. Give me the next year to be tired. I'm okay to be tired for the next year. And so I did it all over again. Wake up at 5am ride my bike four miles into his office to work from six to nine. Then in the night time I'd go again from nine to about midnight, do it all over again midnight to five wake back up go. You get the reenroll I did that for the first like 910 months. I want to tell you something here. That might shock you a little bit. Okay, think with me again. Your Russell Bronson's funnel builder, think of the pressure that that could bring inside of your life and it did brought a lot of mine. I don't want to mess up. And I thought I was going to get fired. For the first. I don't even know like, especially the first like three months because I was spending three for four days on this funnel, and I put it all together, and I was like, This is amazing. Oh my gosh, look what I did really All right, and I'm going to share this funnel with him. And Russell is an awesome, very gentle guy, but at the same time, he's got a standard, right and he's he's Russell Brunson for a reason, right? I mean, the dude knows how to make it rain. So he would look at my funnel and he would just like destroy, like, 90% of the funnel,
bow bow and I'd be like, Oh, crap.
He's like, okay, start back over from scratch. But keep these few elements I'd be like, three or four more days go by I finished the funnel. I bring it back to them. Boom, right and he takes off like 80% of this time. And this pattern repeated every single funnel. It took 13 months. Are you hearing me my friends 13 months on Oh, the literal face to face tutelage of Russell Brunson sitting at his feet. 13 months for me to turn the funnel back over to him. And I walked in one day and he looks at me and goes, good job man that finally sent over I changed one word in the headline I was like,
Unknown Speaker 9:02
a baby. Like, I was so psyched because it was I literally thought I was gonna get fired. He kept destroying it and destroying and destroying and I got to talk to him about it
Steve Larsen 9:12
later. I was like, dude, I thought you were going to get rid of me for the longest time. And he goes really? No, no.
Unknown Speaker 9:17
Like, why did you keep like just destroying He's like, dude, no, no.
Steve Larsen 9:21
will hear me hear me hear me right now, you guys. He said, No, no, no, you're a great funnel builder. When I hired you. You already were. I was already building funnels for other companies. I was already very, very familiar with Click Funnels. And it seems like you were fantastic funnel builder. I was like, okay, but you get the strong stuff into destroying stuff. And he's like, Yeah, but but you I was turning you into a marketer. Oh, wait a second. I was a funnel builder, not a marketer. And why could Russell Brunson poop out like another million dollar funnel every three weeks he and I were building together
and I'm his funnel guy and grow
Unknown Speaker 10:01
I was broke for the first 10 months. You guys, are you hearing what I'm saying? We're building funnels for CNBC. We're building funnels, and I'm like, Wow,
Steve Larsen 10:09
look at this. I'm so excited. It's just so awesome, bro. Hulk broke, right? largely no money had no savings was almost even sometimes negative cash flow and he's paying me Of course, but I was a salaried employee, you know, and I was not thought like I was making it rain on my own. But wait, you're working from nine 6am to 9am and doing the Yeah, because I thought the funnel was why I was successful. And what he taught me how to do was to be a marketer is a very, very, very different thing. Okay. And it's the reason why he could outsource funnel building outsource to as an employee me and he be the marketer and still go make it rain. I had my eyes set on the wrong skill set. You fill me, but Steven, does that mean we need a funnel still in? Yes. I'm gonna talk about that more in future episodes here with you guys as well. Absolutely. Please hear me though. Okay, you have to understand that the funnel, the funnel building skill set, this is the reason why people are like, they'll take the one funnel a challenge to be inside clickfunnels. So they'll be in the funnel space and they'll be just an internet entrepreneur. Oh, funnels don't work. You just suck at marketing. And you think the funnel is why ad makes money, okay? We all have a thick skin, my all right to say that everyone's like, I will not get offended. Thank you so much so voluntarily.
But understand that
that is the reason why you make the cash because of marketing. And funnel building is not marketing. I want to teach you more about that in this show. You can expect more of those kinds of things from me as well. The one funnel away stories show is one that I've been really looking forward to help you know, put out here and such. I'm gonna tell you more of the stories of funnels that are successful, but also the story of what a successful funnel looks like. And I'm going to continue to do that. So hopefully you guys liked this episode, please address the biggest takeaway I want you guys to take away from this whole thing is to understand that funnel building and marketing are not necessarily the same thing. might be looking yourself asking yourself self, why am I still broke? Maybe you're putting your focus on non revenue generating skill sets. And it was when I finally realized this made my first million in 13 months, then the next was right then the year after that 4 million, then you're like, Okay, please don't get weird as I say that my friends, disclaimer, disclaimer, you may not do this, I don't know whatever whatever field is claimed, whatever legal crap legal crap, okay, but understand that when you when you only focus on marketing and ask yourself questions, like, what is marketing? So not posting on Facebook? That can be part of it, but that's not marketing. Okay.
What is a funnel,
the series of pages, that's the method. Okay, but diving on into what marketing really is. Cash comes as a byproduct of marketing, not funnel building, but you need both. Okay, make sure you have an amazing sexy funnel, but it's the marketing activities that actually fills your wallet in your pocket. guys hopefully guys enjoyed this episode Stay tuned I'm going to talk more about this is gonna be somewhat of a little mini series here I want to walk more dive into what a funnel actually is and is not and where money comes from and where it does not come from hope you guys enjoy it please rate subscribe the show really appreciate you guys being here.
