The current economic crisis incited by the Covid-19 pandemic has overwhelmed business owners around the world. It has been a complete upheaval to how many people conduct their business, and for others has meant the extermination of their jobs and livelihoods. For this episode of the One Funnel Away: Stories show, I am joined by Lawrence Kim, entrepreneur, and OFA challenge alum.
Lawrence has been riding the uncertainty of current times and doing his best to keep his business endeavors afloat. Thanks to the One Funnel Away Challenge, he has managed to pivot his direction and leverage his skills to retain revenue and help others do the same.
His entrepreneurial journey is one of determination and confidence. After spending eight years in prison, Lawrence reentered a changed world and a fast-paced workforce intent on making a space for himself. He now spends his days consulting others on the best business practices he’s learned and multiplying sales for the companies he works with.
How Lawrence Kim Got Started With OFA
After spending almost a decade in prison, Lawrence Kim was ready to hit the ground running. He knew he wanted to make his mark and tried to do it being a part of the online marketing world. Lawrence started working for a bus company as a driver. He soon taught himself social media to diversify his skills and hopefully take on a more significant role within the company.
Around that time, he was introduced to Russell Brunson and the world of ClickFunnels but was hesitant to take the plunge to invest back into himself. After some consideration, Lawrence flipped an entire year’s worth of salary by hosting a garage sale and decided to take a leap of faith. He joined the OFA Challenge excited for a new chapter of growth but quickly began to fall behind. His excitement was pulling him into many different directions.
“I’m discovering more about myself as I go deeper, so I’m not afraid of the money anymore.”- Lawrence Kim
Lawrence quickly realized that he would need to refine his focus. He gave himself a year to live off the money he had made from his garage sale and lean into what OFA was teaching him. It led him to approach his boss with the idea of selling bus tickets for their company. Lawrence believed he could build a funnel around selling bus tickets and amplify sales.
Applying What He Learned to His Current Business Climate
“The more I leaned in, the more I found people that are willing to help and take me on to the next place”- Lawrence Kim
That first year of business was certainly not an easy one but was filled with many wins. He had trouble successfully launching his funnel due to the personal nature of tourism in Hawaii. But taking what he learned, he chose not to give up. Lawrence transitioned into text message marketing and even gave out his personal line to potential customers. He committed to giving value to every person he met.
The tactics he used worked to his benefit. Within that first year, Lawrence was able to buy an apartment for himself- with cash! But like in any business, the challenges keep on coming. Currently, he is dealing with the aftermath of the pandemic. Over 180 people within his company have lost their jobs. He is kept up at night with the stress this puts on the lives around him.
Throughout all the turmoil, Lawrence Kim has managed to stay positive and resilient. So much of that he credits with everything he’s learned through OFA. He knows that his skills as a marketer and bringing in sales for the company will be instrumental in helping others get back on their feet.
While business is slow, Lawrence has pivoted his focus to a consulting model. He’s built two courses and a workbook to help other entrepreneurs move forward in their own businesses. He is in the process of also teaching companies how to rebuild through hiring and recruitment.
Lawrence Kim Explains the Importance of Protecting and Building Your Assets
Lawrence Kim has come to learn that entrepreneurship and making money are two completely different things. As an entrepreneur, his number one job is to solve problems and serve others. The money is a byproduct of that effort. He now knows how important it is to protect the business as it is his greatest asset. Without it, there is no money to generate.
“Entrepreneurship solves problems, and marketing is what delivers the solution to a market place.”- Steve Larsen
Because he has been able to find success in his business, he feels equipped and ready to serve others. That’s how he determines his future goals because when he is in the service of others, he is also giving back to himself.
Entrepreneurship has taught Lawrence Kim so much about himself. It wasn’t until he went through the trials and tribulations that he understood how much growth is required to run and operate a business. He now dedicates his time to help uplift others that are on a similar journey. And the top piece of advice for others is to lean in! Lean into your business and give it all you have because it will return the favor!

Thank you for starting this podcast. Every day I’m studying, building, and implementing! The support and guidance you guys provide is priceless. I may have given up if it wasn’t for your support. Everyone comes into this thinking it’s going to be easy, and for a few it is. The majority of us must dig deep and change ourselves to become “good enough” to make it to the payoff. My goal is to one day be on a stage with people chanting my name. Not because I want to be a hero. Not because I’m rich, or famous, but because I made such a positive impact on their lives that they love me for it. Thanks for all your help in keeping this dream alive. D

The One Funnel Away Challenge was exactly what I needed to actually ‘finish’ a project I had been working on for years. It’s so easy to put stuff off, isn’t it? Well lucky for us we get access to some genius marketers and entrepreneurs through this challenge. They give us the formula and work with us to go through it... so there’s no excuses anymore. Can’t wait to hear more stories of this from Steve! Right now I’m actually building up a funnel for my Juggling Video Course and will be re-doing the OFA Challenge to make sure I finish it in time. - WhosChrisHughes

All the stuff that are from like.com secrets, I do the fishing pole at the I look, these are your people, here's how you help them. And I use the same principles that I learned in marketing to fix the problems because I remember in some podcasts, like it's all jumbled up in my brain. But marketing is the thing that will solve almost any problem that I can face. And that's how I'm going to tackle things and it's been working out. So why change it.

Or how can we get leads and buyers for our own products when there's so much competition with deep pockets? Finally, those questions are answered and 10s of thousands of people are taking the challenge to walk the new path of entrepreneurship. Follow this podcast while I asked about their shocking journey from failure to freedom, you can join them to at one point homeaway.com I'm your host Steve Jay Larson and you're listening to one funnel away stories.
What's going on one of the Steve Larson Welcome back to the one funnel way stories show I am asking awesome entrepreneurs about their journeys from
failure to freedom
and hardships throughout. It's very timely interview I feel like right now to do very excited to have on here a guy I've gotten to know a little bit here in the last year I feel like and senior senior round and grateful to have you on you're welcome to the show Lawrence Kim. Thanks, guys. What's up aloha from Hawaii? hope everybody's doing well and staying safe. Yeah.
Yeah. Thank you so much. Thanks for I appreciate that. Yeah, there's a lot going on right now. And, and hopefully, I mean, you're just saying that there's some some kind of heavy stuff that's happened for your business and everyone's feeling it for sure. Absolutely. So
Lawrence Kim 1:48
definitely, like I was sharing earlier. I'll just go through it again. And talk about how I started with the journey with you guys. Yeah, absolutely. I would love to know how you get started the the long story short, I did a Did eight and a half years in prison I went away in 2007. So I can imagine I missed the whole smartphone revolution. Right? I went away with a flip phone and I had to learn about the world changing while I was inside through magazines and everything right? Yeah, I hit the ground running. And one of the first companies that came to work for was this place right here where you can't really see anything but it's a bus company. I started driving for them, but I wanted more so I started hustling and doing all kinds of stuff I learned about a social media I got into my phone phone Gary Vaynerchuk was selling things like from garage sales and doing whatever I could in that process. I found Russell Brunson and all these ads kept popping up and I was like, What if this Click Funnels thing how do I do I want to make that online money. And you know, I I was afraid In the beginning I would step in, put tiptoe in by the book and like whoa, more sales. I was afraid of jumping into funnels because I was trying to hold onto my cache, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, it's called tiptoe, tiptoe. tiptoe and what I realized that I kept tiptoeing and I kept revising the same stuff because they were offered as other funnels don't
forbid, so I've done the same,
but but you know, you guys came out with one funnel away, October, October 2018. I believe it was. Thanks. So yeah, and at that time, I had a garage sale and flipped a whole year's worth of salary where I didn't have to work. I didn't have to spend any of my paychecks from work. So I felt a little bit comfortable spending that on investing in myself. So I went in as $100 I can do $100 so I did $100 and, you know, I, I move fast in Hawaii. I feel like oh, yeah, this This place is slow. I went in, and I got my ass kicked. Whoa, day one, day two. I was losing. I was falling behind on the challenge. And it was something that you said you said to lean in. You said don't worry about it. lean in and for me, that's Man, okay, cool. I'm focusing on too many shiny objects is what I learned at that time. Like too many things I was trying to do. And I decided to lean in on this world Click Funnels and I decided to give myself one year, I bought some funnel they gave me one year of Platinum was okay, cool. One year, I don't have to worry about bills. I'm going all in one year. I don't know anything. I'm going to either make this happen, or I'm just going to go back to work. Now. That was my plan. Yeah, I went in. I failed the first one funnel away challenge, but it was okay. Because I was like, okay, Steve told me lean in, I'm gonna go lean in. I don't know what I'm going to build. I don't know what I'm going to do. But what I do now is sell bus tickets. So I went to my boss, and I said, Look, I'm going to quit this job. I'm going to I would like a contract with you. I would like to try to sell your bus tickets online. And I believe that I can sell more than your company can sell your own product. And and she said, Okay, we'll try it out. She really supports me beautiful, wonderful woman who's given me every opportunity in life. I still work Walk with her to this day. Yeah, sitting with her But anyway, so I left and I found that I could sell bus tickets online with Click Funnels with just a landing page no funnel yet but just the landing page. Oh, cool. Shoot, none of it works I panicked I panicked, like, Oh, I don't have like, all these like, technical buttons and all that. And then I found I did I dive in, I lean in, you know, I find Jamie Smith. And I okay, here's their solutions. people in this community are my solution. I lean in more, leaning more. And I've always found that the more I leaned in, the more I found people that are willing to help and take me on to the next place. And it's just been ongoing, ongoing, ongoing. I couldn't get the funnel working because our tourism thing is very, like you have to build that relationship just like how you guys talk about emails and all this Have you got to build that relationship? Yeah, my prefers relationship time with me is about three to four days. So I said, Oh, okay. I'm gonna connect and deliver with them through text message and on the phone. I don't have any I don't have time to learn about text messaging service. So I gave everyone my personal text message phone. Nice. There through words. Okay, here, here's the next thing you need. Here's the next thing I gave value that are over the phone to every single person I met. And I was able to buy an apartment in Waikiki full cash. Wow, wow. And that was my first year. And it's been a journey. I feel like you guys are helping me get the money to go deeper. I've joined the collective. I'm not panicking. I didn't know how I was going to wing it. But I'll find a way. I'm in there. I'm learning more every day and back to the store where I am today where I started this book, you suddenly lose everything in 30 days. Yeah, I feel like it's so real right now. And and, and you guys are taking me on some cool, epic journey right now because everything you guys is talking about is coming true for me. I lost everything. The company that I was selling, my tickets are lost. Everything we laid off 180 people this weekend, I can't sleep at night I hear the stories of how every single person's life is going to be affected and everything and I just know that me doing my part as a marketer and and bringing in sales for this company fixing this company, when this world comes back into order is what's going to help these people get back into the feet or like their lives back in order. And so I feel like you guys have turned me into a superhero of some sort. Right? And I'm following you guys. Lena, I just want to thank you guys for helping me every step of the way. Now appreciate that. And, and the feeling is mutual, because, you know, someone told me I remember was said one of the best gifts you could ever give someone who's teaching you is to be the best student
Unknown Speaker 7:45
because they've spent all this time putting all these materials together and then to see that people go like 20% through something and you're like all the other 80 was gold, you know, and and so I've seen you we've seen you and seen everything that you're doing. It's a life changing for all parties. involved. So we really appreciate that a lot. So you went in and you started now are you still doing? You're selling bus tickets now? Still there? Or what's the final you're doing?
Lawrence Kim 8:10
Cuz there's no there's no anybody in Hawaii at the moment, right? I still keep that. It's going. It's working out on its own. It's zero sales right now. So I'm a consulting business consultant in Hawaii. So I started building a course I built out a workbook I was okay, what are they doing? How are they doing? Okay, build a workbook and I got two courses, what kind of pages I've been looking at like the like Dan, Henry's style of things. I like the pieces of everybody side, take a look and I bought now hiring secrets where I teach companies how to rebuild through hiring and recruitment. And I have it all going, it's all ready to go. It's got to film the courses and launch and it's something that I do in real life. So I feel like oh, maybe I could turn it into a video course. I don't know how it's gonna work out probably launch it as the world comes back on its feet, CEOs and company. They're gonna have to rebuild. So I feel like the timing is good. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 9:03
yeah, they're gonna have to rebuild and everything goes down, we'll come back up and kind of prepping and putting the assets together to ride the tide on the way back up, you know, and it'll happen again and another eight or 10 years, and it's just kind of the ebb and flow. So it's, I feel like you got to learn to swim when it goes down to you know,
Lawrence Kim 9:20
it'll continuously happen. So that's, that's what I do actually, in Hawaii. I'm not actually just a bus ticket guy, but I feel like that's something that's valuable I could teach it's a we went through a phase of, we have much more bigger competitive companies in Hawaii who pay a lot more like 510 dollars more for the same pool of people. And I've been able to compete with them and not have to compete on price or offer just on value and and I've learned how to recruit against them using the same marketing principles that I learned from you guys through sales. I can almost picture half all the stuff that are from like.com secrets. I do that a fishing pole at the I look, these are your people, here's how you help them I, I use the same principles that I learned in marketing to fix the problems because I remember in some podcasts, like it's all jumbled up in my brain, but marketing is the thing that will solve almost any problem that I can face. And that's how I'm going to tackle things and it's been working out so why change it? Yeah, yeah, it's the same principles kind of applied all over the place. I mean, that's why it works for 99% of companies that are out there you know, just the same model how you gonna get leads sweet, how you gonna sell some of them awesome Hey, good fulfill on it. Awesome, can automate 90% of that, you know, once you figure out what you're selling, who you sell to, so I guess for right now and what you're going through, I mean, you've clearly made a lot of like identity shifts throughout and onto on the back of entrepreneurship found more and more and more and more of yourself, which I think in my mind is the beauty of the game. That's why I keep playing the game is the self growth issue or part of it. When it comes to the business though, for right now what would you say is like the most challenging problem you're solving in your company right now. I mean, I know the Coronavirus stuff was going on, but how are you guys tackle on that? So what I've come to learn about myself from this thing happening is that making money and entrepreneurship are two completely different things, which I didn't think it was. And now that I know you're entrepreneurship, I have to solve problems and serve other people comes before making money. I'm learning that now. So me and my president are the only people who are left in this company and her husband. And you know, we have rolled up our sleeves and done everything else that needs to be done in the company, wash the buses, secure the yard, sleepier, protect the assets, all the things that needs to be done, are being done because we have nobody. And our only responsibility is to keep this place alive. Bring it back so that we can bring the people back and help them pay their rent, help them pay their trucks, help them keep their families together. And that's where I am right now. Um, I feel like I'm in a transition of learning that it's not about Make money and the money is a byproduct of me protecting this asset so I can continue to make money again. Yeah, no, this, this is the acid. This is the company that helps me to sell my bus tickets and all the other activities after if this is dead, my business is dead. So even though I don't make money now, I'm all in on protecting this and rebuilding this because this is my asset right now. Yeah, that's where I am. Yeah, yeah. Love it. Love it. Yeah, entrepreneurship does not mean cash. Really interesting. I was someone I was talking to. and entrepreneurship solves problems. But then marketing is what delivers the solution to a marketplace is that there are very different entrepreneur doesn't mean money. entrepreneurs in the business of solving the problem. And the marketers are in the business of selling the solution to the problem is very different. Different skill set there for sure. Yeah, absolutely. I've grown from that to this short period. I feel like I've graduated from like, I need to make money I need to make money to like I need to solve real problems for people. Yeah, I feel like I'm there now. And it really means that from now used to say it, but it really means that for me now and I feel like I'm able to do that because I was able to secure a small piece for myself when times were good because I was to do that I feel like I don't have to stress out and feel desperate about different things. I don't have to worry about what the government might do for me, I don't care about it, right, because I was secure this and I feel like that has given me a passion to serve others more. So now I know if I can create bigger pushes later, I can serve more people free, freer, you know, in the future. So I know, I feel like that's what it's about. And I feel like that's my angle. And my goal. Now my next goal. Yeah, yeah, I guess in terms of where that's going, like, push forward five years, what are you trying to go do? I hate when people ask me like, What's your goal in 10 years from now? I'm like, Hey, I don't know. I plan three months at a time. But like, what do you have a vision for where you're trying to push this and where you're trying to go with it? Because I mean, I'm just gonna say it's, it is rare to have somebody go just like straight straight out of the gate, just start crushing it. I mean, you you, you clearly went through the ups and the downs with it. It's not like it just came easy, but you learn the skill you put the time in and it's working and you automated it enough like you're doing the next thing which is cool and not normal either. So where are you going to go? Well, I
To be honest, five years is way too far right now I'm just taking it like day by day like all I really wanted to dive into the collective people and see what that network is about him. I'm just going through the journeys and building my stories and seeing where this takes me I I don't really have any plans. I feel like the teachings have been revealing more vamos out I've since I got out of prison I've never traveled until now. I've traveled now to funnel hacking live and seen a whole new world and discovered an energy that I needed and so now I seek that more seek that more even looking at a little.in so Coco trying to like network with everyone but like I feel like I'm I'm discovering more about myself as I go deeper so I'm not afraid of the money anymore. I don't care if it all goes away or goes back. Because I feel like that's how much more I'm getting. You know what I mean? Yeah. But five years from now, I do hope to possibly help more people to be where I am now. I try to tell the clickfunnels community don't like the problems are very small that they talk about on the clickfunnels Tina I, I share with them on messenger like, look how ugly my page is. It's super ugly. I don't, my design sucks. But here's what it does. It works. And then I test it. I test different colors and different photos and all that didn't really matter. Like look how ugly it is, to this day, I leave it as ugly as it is as clean as it is to just prove a point that like, that's not what should be holding you back from launching whatever it is you need to launch and get it off your chest and see what happens
Steve Larsen 15:49
after 100% with it. Absolutely. You know, my rants on that topic for
Lawrence Kim 15:56
you just mentioned something really big though. You said that as you've been doing this journey. You've been
you've been having some of the biggest self discovery ever. What What is one of the biggest things you've discovered? about you? Yeah, because there's like a business but then there's you running the business. How have you grown with the biggest discovery that I've discovered that I've discovered that my life My life is very, very like this I have I feel like I was blind all of this time. I would listen to I listen to a lot of Marketing Secrets podcast just on like an end sound as I sleep or throughout the day. But those stories like all day long, that's all I listen to all different podcasts all day long just goes in the background might not be actively listening. But I feel like those stories didn't mean anything to me until I went through it. No, I feel it much. I didn't feel Russell was saying to like he sat in a room and all hundred of his employees had to go and he lost everything and all his business. I didn't feel any of that until I look around my yard now. And there's nobody here until there's nothing left. There's really, you know, I feel like sitting down hopeless, the money's all depleting. We had a half a million dollars worth of real funding in like, was it seven days? And also, it just, you know, like just getting devastated all at one time. I feel like I'm learning much more and I'm seeing much more and I'm able to come out of this later, with a bigger vision of like, of like what I need to prepare for, you know, I totally agree. It's mean I feel like I've described it as like skills falling off your eyes or like someone grabbing like blackout curtains and just ripping them down like
have you noticed that? Do you see the all this cool stuff that's in the room, too.
Steve Larsen 17:33
I didn't know this. This room is beautiful. What? Why are those curtains up? That's kind of a feels like to me. I feel
Lawrence Kim 17:40
like I was going through life like this. And then time I go deeper and deeper and I lean in. I feel like another layer disappears and another layer just like whoa, I'm always like, yeah, and all you know, yeah, I just keep going with it with a smile because I feel like it'll be okay. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 17:57
and half of the reason is okay is because we choose what we know. Absolutely well thanks for taking the time honestly Lawrence it's been fantastic seeing you again and having on the show here and just appreciate the the story that you've gone through I know it'll inspire a lot of other people as well so if you guys are watching or listening to this now and you want to take the one phone away challenge go to one phone away.com if you want as we actually go through this Yeah, you go to 30 days calm and get on the summit there and see 30 internet millionaires tell what they would do if they lost everything which is very timely right now.
