Publishing is often the most daunting part of launching a business. Entrepreneurs everywhere do whatever it takes to put it off. I hear excuses like they’re not ready, or they have nothing to say.
Let me be the one to say it. Any reason you have for not publishing is just an excuse. And you have to get over it if you want to move forward in your business. If you’re wondering what you should publish or worry about not knowing your voice, then this message is for you.
In today’s episode of One Funnel Away: Stories, I’m going to explain why it’s important to start publishing now and to dispel any fears you may be having surrounding the process. Remember, people need to hear what you have to say. You might not have a clear understanding of your voice at the moment, but it will come as you continue to grow and move forward.
Don’t I Need Credentials to Start Publishing?
This is a giant misconception that many entrepreneurs have. They see other business owners that they look up to and assume that they’ve always been polished and successful. They worry that they have nothing to offer to the marketplace because they haven’t hit some imaginary milestone or accomplishment. People fear that they just aren’t qualified enough to have a platform. This is not the case. I’ve had this fear before, and it is nothing more than a false belief.
“The secret is publishing your ascent”- Steve Larsen
Not only do you not need any credentials to start, it’s even better that you don’t. It makes you relatable. People want and need to see your humanity. That’s how they become inspired by you. If you wait until you’ve amassed this large audience and are mega-successful, then you’ll come across as way less believable.
The internet is the one place where you get to be you and celebrated for it! When you work for someone else, you become that CEO’s definition of what success is. But when you are your own CEO, it’s you that gets to define that quality. You can be absolutely anyone you want. Take me, for example; I show up in my t-shirts and hoodies teaching others how to become million-dollar marketers. I don’t roll up in my fancy sports cars and suits because that’s not me. The point is, the gift of being yourself is incredibly liberating, and you deserve to share that with the world.
But I Don’t Know Where I Want to Take This
So what if you don’t know what your voice is or where you want to take this ten years from now. If you go back to the first thirty episodes that I’ve published, you’ll notice I’m struggling to find my voice. You see, at the point, I was really publishing for myself. As I continued, you’ll start to hear my confidence begin to build. And eventually, I’m all out there with sharing my opinions, and I do it unapologetically.
I published one hundred episodes without any real clarity on where I wanted to go. This should show you that you don’t need to know your end goal. You just have to keep pushing forward. That really is the key.
I remember speaking to Russell one night and really struggling internally with what my purpose might be. He laughed in my face, and it threw me for a total loop. His answer was eye-opening. He told me that I already knew my purpose. It was to provide value in the marketplace, document the journey, and help solve problems along the way.
You don’t need clarity at the start. You’ll find it along the way. Start publishing for yourself and see where that takes you. And when you finally find your voice, you’ll find your purpose.
“People need to hear what you have to say”- Steve Larsen
Now I use content and publishing for a marketing purpose. Publishing has helped me keep my shirt when things get rocky because I now have a following to back me up. Publishing is one of the most powerful parachutes. It acts as a safety net for any funnel you launch. Honestly, it’s pretty stupid NOT to publish.
Now it’s your turn to figure out you can start publishing and be consistent with it. You don’t have to go all out. You just have to start. Are you feeling ready? Head over to the One Funnel Away Challenge to get started. I’ll see you there!

Thank you for starting this podcast. Every day I’m studying, building, and implementing! The support and guidance you guys provide is priceless. I may have given up if it wasn’t for your support. Everyone comes into this thinking it’s going to be easy, and for a few it is. The majority of us must dig deep and change ourselves to become “good enough” to make it to the payoff. My goal is to one day be on a stage with people chanting my name. Not because I want to be a hero. Not because I’m rich, or famous, but because I made such a positive impact on their lives that they love me for it. Thanks for all your help in keeping this dream alive. D

The One Funnel Away Challenge was exactly what I needed to actually ‘finish’ a project I had been working on for years. It’s so easy to put stuff off, isn’t it? Well lucky for us we get access to some genius marketers and entrepreneurs through this challenge. They give us the formula and work with us to go through it... so there’s no excuses anymore. Can’t wait to hear more stories of this from Steve! Right now I’m actually building up a funnel for my Juggling Video Course and will be re-doing the OFA Challenge to make sure I finish it in time. - WhosChrisHughes

If it's not your jam to be a pro all the time in front of Lamborghinis, don't think you have to be in order to have success. All right? I'm not that way. I don't care. Okay? But like, if I was wearing a suit, 24 seven and just untouchable, reduce littering, right? Very much like that. Like, you wouldn't follow me man or you looking at everything that I was super skeptical all the time. 24 seven, bottom, it depends who you're trying to attract. A lot of it depends on if it's you. If you're like us, you've dreamt of building your own business empire and the freedom that can bring you but today there's hidden traps on the path of entrepreneurship placed by Big brother and the big brands. So now we're forced to answer hard questions like how do we grow a real company without taking on debt or giving away ownership? Or how can we get leads and buyers for our own products when there's so much competition with deep pockets? Finally, those questions are answered and 10s of thousands of people are taking the challenge to walk the new path of entrepreneurship follow this path. Well, I asked about their shopping journey from failure to freedom. You can join them too at one funnel away, calm. I'm your host, Steve Jay Larson, and you're listening to one funnel away stories. Alright guys, let me go through three things that I noticed. These are the real reasons people ask this question. Stephen is publishing important. If you have followed anything, or even been slightly in the funnel world at all, you have heard Russell and I say things like,
there's really three things that people are scared of. Number one, they think that they need some kind of credential. They're worried that oh my gosh, because I'm not a two comma club award winner but because I made a million dollars because I'm not blank. Whatever I am, I don't qualify. I don't qualify to be a publisher. Why would somebody even listen to me? And while I understand the fear and actually have the exact same one myself, it's complete false belief and you've got to call yourself out on that. Okay. People will follow you right now. Case in point. The show Seinfeld is about me. Nothing is one of the most popular shows ever you can document your own life and think that no one will watch it people are gonna watch it Alright, you don't need to be doesn't have to be this amazingly Anyway, enough on that. But the point being also that if you wait to start publishing to be Russell Brunson, right and have your massive audience, right, and, and, and all this stuff, if you start publishing with it, you're gonna be so less believable. I remember when I started publishing, I started publishing and listen to the first few episodes. And I was probably an episode like 50 ish. And it was what I was working for Russell by that point. And it was probably Episode 50 ish. And I walk into the office is the new office. So I walk in and my desk was on the other side of the room, walk into his office, say hi to him. And as I'm turning, I'm like, Hey, dude, you ever listened to your first few episodes on your show? He looked at me. He goes, Oh, don't do that. And I was like, I know, right? It sucks. I think I'm going to go delete the first like 20 or 30 episodes. Now Russell is not a confrontational dude. Right, but but he's sitting there and I said, I think I'm gonna go delete my first few episodes because it's not awesome. He's at his computer and he goes, Oh, and I was like, go, he goes, that's how they knew you were human once. That's exactly what he said. And I was like, Oh my gosh, like, You're totally right. He's like, dude, if you, if you come out of the gate looking like this perfection thing, people are going to think they want to be like you, they're going to go out thinking that they have to be that level in order to even begin. Leave the weird episodes out there, leave the weird pose. So stop caring. Oh, I gotta have this amazing credential. Do you know how unbelievable Russell would seem, if he started publishing out versus like 800 episodes ago, like he has or whatever, right? He published his ascent. That's the r eal that's one of the secrets, even the downs, right? He published his ascent. And because of that, we celebrate the success with him. Your audience wants to do that. If you don't have an audience, your future audience wants to do that. If you Sit back, and you're like, I'm not going to publish yet until I'm hitting the certain status, you're going to seem so less believable, so less believable. I had someone reach out to me once making fun of the one funnel way challenge. They're like, Steven, how can you be teaching million dollar strategies? You don't even know you don't even wear suit while you're teaching them. I was like, the freak. I don't care. And first of all, I don't need to wear a suit. But I was like, but people have that mentality. And I call them out on and I was like, why do you need a suit or a freakin briefcase to make millions of bucks for me, right? And so when you go in and you start doing this is the very same thing. How would you guys approach my material? How would you How would you approach Russell stuff? If he and I work? 24 seven, and I know some people do this and that's fine. But if it's not your jam to be a pro all the time in front of Lamborghinis. Don't think you have to be in order to have success. All right, I'm not that way. I don't care. Okay. But like if I was wearing a suit, 24 seven and just untouchable. Right? Kiss littering, right? Very much like that. Like, you wouldn't follow me man. Are you You would look at everything that is super skeptical all the time. 24 seven, a lot of it depends who you're trying to attract. A lot of it depends on if it's you. If that's not you don't be someone else on the internet, the internet, guys, I want you to think about this.
I know I said this a few episodes ago here, but think about this for a second, if you started working for Russell Brunson, or somebody else, or any is like, let's say you're in a nine to five right now. Okay, let's go with that. And so let's say you're in a nine to five right now you have to be D O's interpretation of what success is. You have to wear certain things. You got to show up certain ways to speak languages. You see what I'm saying? You got to go. You are the CEOs interpretation of what success is. When you become an entrepreneur on the internet. It's not that way. The internet is the only platform where you get rewarded for being you louder. You don't have to be someone else's interpretation of success. So if you aren't the Lamborghinis and stuff kind of guy, whatever. If you are more power to you, I don't care the Point is ubu louder and the internet facilitates and rewards you based on your ability to do that. I know I wear like aggressive shirts with my favorite nine problems with my pitching one okay but but uh that's the point I'm being myself loud I don't care whatever I guess what the internet in the following likes me for that they would see and smell straight through it if I was trying to be someone else but i'm not i'm trying to release you guys from thinking that you need to be this thing it to be qualified and have these credentials to have success not true on mine my picture somewhere else not sure on the internet all okay? That's one of the first things okay start publishing when you're nowhere yet. The MCs you interesting to follow. So boom, kibosh dunzo. Okay, credentials. That's the first one second one. A lot of people think that you need clarity on what you are going to be doing 10 years from now in order to start publishing. It's not true at all. That's not true at all. So it was 34 business tries was 17 funnels really, before I had one of them really hit there's a lot less educate Back when I started that started this game, funnel based education that is, and uh, I didn't know what I wanted to go do 34 tries before one really blew up, but it was easily another 10 before like the next million came, and it was easily like another 10 past that for the next multi million, right and the next is what I'm saying is, I was teaching at an event, I do an entire event teaching, just publishing, right? And so I'm trying to condense this down very well. You're not gonna get it all, but I'll try to condense it down as much as possible. I'm gonna draw a little timeline here for you guys. Okay, check this out. Alrighty, so we've got here if this is a timeline of all the episodes I've ever put out ever, the first 30 and I sucked. It'll sound like I'm reading because I am. I wrote all of my episodes out on legal pieces of paper. And you can see you can totally hear me, I think at turning the page a few times. Okay, but the first 30 episodes for me I was really trying to find my voice. I remember asking Russell's like Dude, how do you find your voice? I asked him this in his office across his desk remember exactly where I standing, but he looked right at me and he goes, Yeah, man, finding your voice. That's a hard one. He said, that's one of the things I will not be able to teach you. Like, dang it. He's like, you're gonna find it as you go. I was like, okay, but it kind of gave me a license to suck. So for the first 30 episodes, I'm gonna say just 30 I tell people I wasn't I wasn't publishing for them. I was really publishing for me. I was trying to find my voice. Find my voice my voice by about Episode 80 I don't know what happened. But around Episode 80, I started gaining confidence. Like if you listen to the first 80 episodes of my stuff, like I am so diplomatically and politically correct. No opinions. There's no like I'm apologizing for everything. I do have an opinion over. And this is what I believe that's okay. Don't hurt me. Right. It's very much like that. So the first like 80 episodes, for some reason around 80 though, kinda stopped caring so much. And around Episode 80 ish. I started sharing opinions a little bit apologetically still, but I started doing it. Okay, the start sharing my opinions. And I told people these are opinions not fact, right. Although I think that they're fact.
Right around 120 something special happen, where I started sharing my opinions on apologetically. I'm not gonna even try to spell that word so I'm just gonna throw screw over. Okay. I started sharing my opinions around at started sharing them unapologetically I was a jerk. But I was like, Hey, this is really what I believe and if you don't believe that, that's okay. Maybe you should follow someone else. I even say that on the show several times, which made everyone fall harder. So now I want to point something out here around episode stick with me for a second you guys just stick with me. All right, because I'm talking about right here about clarity. Oh, the need I need to have clarity on what it is I need to be doing the first hundred episodes. I was working for Russell one. No one was me leaving and documenting me leaving 100 episodes without real clarity on what I wanted to go do. 100 this timeline should teach you a lot about what you can expect as you start to publish and how much you don't have to know in order to begin. So I go out, and from about Episode 100 to about I remember is about Episode 240 240. And I actually want you to really, like feel it. 240 think about that, okay. 240 episodes go by, and I suddenly realize what I'm supposed to be, or at least have a guide on when I'm supposed to be I realized, oh my gosh, I started getting clarity 240 I was in the inner circle, and it's paused right now as I do this video with you guys now, but I was in the inner circle and I was I was getting food and I walk around. I was getting food or then Russell standing kind of like a little bit off to my right just like he's just like right here. Like it's weird the cameras and he you know, it's kind of like potluck stuff. So it's always dinner. Circle members all over the place. We were in someone's house and, and Russell's right there. And and I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I don't know if you can tell. But Russell and I were close. We worked literally physically next to each other for years, right? And so he looks up at me. He goes, he goes, Dude, what's wrong? I didn't know that anyone can tell something's wrong. I was like grabbing beef or whatever,
Unknown Speaker 11:21
you know? Because
Steve Larsen 11:23
I said, I don't know. I'm trying to figure out like, what my purpose is. And this is Russell's reaction.
Unknown Speaker 11:30
Like keel over laughing and I was like, Oh my gosh, like, what is this?
Steve Larsen 11:35
Stop laughing at me Russell Brunson. You know, he's like, oh, and Myron golden is right next to him. And he goes, Oh my gosh, wait, what did he just ask you? And Russell Takes a Breath long enough to answer goes he asked the purpose question and Myron. So I have these two giants making fun of this question that every entrepreneur has had on their mind. And I'm like sitting here with like, beef. I'm like, Who? Like this is something that's really important to me like so Life I got a giant sale. And, and Russell leans up and he goes, I was like, dude, I'm not kidding, man. He goes, you know the answer to that, Steven, you know the answer to that, right now runs to 40 to 40. Okay. You know the answer that he said, stop caring so much. He said I was 13 years into the game 13 years. How long have you been doing it? He's like, 13 years before I realized I should be the funnel guy. 13 years. Oh my gosh. Then Myron. Myron looks over and he goes, Yeah, dude, I found out three months ago and I'm supposed to do that's like, Oh, you don't caring too much about this. And I just need to stop. He said, You know the answer, though, Steven, the answer is for you to go provide value to the marketplace, document the journey and solve problems for people and it's going to find you along the way.
Thank you. Thank you. So you mean I don't need ultra clarity. I mean, I was already started. I started getting clarity because a few weeks later, he messaged me back and he goes by the way if you don't become the offer guy, someone I don't like is going to be I want you to Take that stand, like okay. Dana Derrick's retract out of like a day later. So the exact same thing. And I just it, I'm trying to help you see and understand that the market advisors, people around you will help you see things in you that you're not seeing in yourself. So I say publish for the business. But really at the beginning, you're publishing to find yourself. You've published into find your positions, your publishing, to find your clarity on what it is that you want to do in this life and what it is that you want to go build, but you don't need it to begin. In fact, you're less interesting to follow sometimes if you do if you're too pristine, which leads me to the next one. You gotta be this amazing spokesperson. true at all. You guys all hear my arms, my asthma imperfections and my speeches. I know I'm a little bit of loose cannon sometimes. Whatever, okay, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. You want to be professional and be like everybody else, you're not gonna be interesting to follow anyway. The attractive characters, the weirdest ones online, all right, be yourself doesn't matter. So real fast, I just want to walk through a few things again, and just help you guys see that in public. Important. Yes. And I've been talking about it from a personal development standpoint. But really, from a business standpoint, it's extremely important while you are going to go and find your voice, and gain opinions and learn to share those opinions without reserve and start getting clarity on what you want to go, do you understand that I was like, several million dollars in revenue before I actually got to this point. And so you don't need to be and again, disclaimer, disclaimer, you're probably not gonna do that. Whatever I'm supposed to say. I can't guarantee you're gonna do the same. Okay? I call that the legal legal crap section. Okay, but understand, like, this is the journey, this is how it goes. And you get rewarded in this game for playing it that way instead of with auto ridiculous. Oh, this is I gotta be monk level status on what my purpose is. 24 seven. Not true at all. None of us play it that way. So anyway, understanding to find the voice you find your purpose. And then the final thing I want you to see is how I use content and publishing for a marketing purpose. So what really changed from here on is I started using my channel And I started using publishing to launch offers to launch products and to bring attention to them. So I started going in, and these last few, I started going in and just be like, Okay, I'm gonna go launch this offer. And what I did is I was like, Okay, let me go use some of the most powerful sales scripts in the world. And instead of them hearing them on something like a webinar, what if I just dripped out the script on my show as individual episodes, maybe that will sell people into the offers faster? That's exactly what happened. So guys, I know I'm saying a lot in this episode. I know I'm going hard and heavy on it, be understand that publishing to own your own list, right? All the stuff that's going on in the world right now, the reason why we're okay and why I didn't lose my shirt at all, is because I have been publishing, I have a following. I have a list. And when stuff was going great, I could look back at the list and say, Hello list, what are you struggling with and just go solve the next problem for them and keep my business. So go in and start thinking to yourself, how can I start publishing How can I be consistent with it and there are so many tactics and techniques, understand that publishing itself is one of the most powerful parachutes. For anything, you launch a safety net for any funnel you develop. And it is literally like having insurance on any revenue that you're going to go risk to go watch something. It's, it's, it's stupid to not publish, it's dumb to not publish, okay? You don't have to go all out. You don't have to do everything I'm doing right here. The first times I ever launched a show or whatever it was me and me. And I would take Russell's microphone from his computer and I plug it into mine at 6am. And I would do my episodes like that as it and then I would go and I would use these little syndication tools that are $5 a month. That's it. Don't you have to go crazy all over the place. The purpose Steven, what do I publish about? Now? We've gone through all this stuff. The easiest thing while you're in this phase still, like man, I don't even know my voice is yet Steven. That's okay. All right, man. I don't even know my opinions are okay, man. I don't even know if I can be confirmed. And then when I know what they are, it's okay. Don't compare yourself to me. Don't compare yourself to Russell or anyone else you against you and you against yesterday. During this phase, there's only one thing I want you to focus on document, then. So don't think about producing. Think about documenting. What are you doing right now? Have you told anyone that yet? Okay, after this episode, I give you permission to completely stop, unhook and create for yourself a content calendar. What are you going to create? What do you be consistent with? It will be the security of your entire business. And frankly, we don't spend that much money in ADS. Most of my revenue comes from the fact that I published consistently, and it becomes a marketing activity. I totally found this episode helpful. Is publishing important. Absolutely. I'm trying to condense that a lot. I know I said a lot on that one. This might be one for you to revisit and re listen to. But while there's so many tactics and so many strategies, I thought I'd focus this episode on you and what happens in people's heads while they start to do it. understand where you are on this path. Understand, hey, I may not know my voice yet. That doesn't mean publishing is wrong. You may just not be good yet. Give yourself Grace, start moving forward, start talking about your journey. People need to hear what you have to say. Thanks so much for being here. Please rate and subscribe for the show.
